Common tumble dryer problems (symptoms and solutions)
Many tumble dryer faults have a simple cause that you can check yourself. Below you will find what you can safely check for each symptom, and when it’s better to call a technician.
Why is my tumble dryer no longer drying?
To check (simple and without risk):
- The lint filter is clean.
- The condenser / heat exchanger (if your appliance has one) is cleaned.
- The water reservoir is emptied (for a condenser dryer).
- The air supply/ventilation is not blocked (grills clear, appliance has enough space).
If the problem keeps recurring, smells burnt, or an error code appears? Then usually the heating element or the moisture sensor is faulty.
Why won't my tumble dryer start?
To check (simple and without risk):
- The appliance is receiving power (plug is in properly, fuse/circuit breaker has not tripped).
- The door is properly closed and the door contact clicks into place.
- The water reservoir is empty and correctly positioned.
- The lint filter and condenser are clean (some appliances do not start when blocked/overheating).
If the tumble dryer still doesn't start or stops immediately, then the door contact or the electronics are suspect.
Why is the drum of my tumble dryer no longer turning?
To check (simple and without risk):
- The appliance is not overloaded.
- The laundry is not in one lump — loosen the load and redistribute it.
- The door is properly closed and the door lock is working.
- The lint filter and air duct are not blocked (overheating can prevent spinning).
If the problem recurs or the drum feels blocked, the drive belt is usually broken or stretched. This is a common repair that the technician performs in one visit.
Why is my tumble dryer making a lot of noise?
Often: imbalance, overloading, or an object stuck in the drum. Remove the load and check for any coins or objects stuck between the drum wall.
If the sound remains metallic or persists, it indicates worn bearings or a stretched drive belt. Continuing to run it will worsen the damage.
Why does my tumble dryer smell burnt?
This is the only symptom where you must stop the machine immediately and unplug it. Usually, the cause is harmless — lint that has accumulated against the heating element — but the fire risk is real.
Clean the lint filter and the air duct and do not use the appliance until you are sure. If the smell persists, have a technician check the heating element and the thermostat.
What does the error code on my tumble dryer mean?
Each brand uses its own codes. A message like CLn or E01 often simply indicates a dirty filter, while other codes point to a faulty sensor or electronics. Look up your brand in the overview below for the exact meaning.

Condenser dryer, heat pump or vented — we repair all types
Condenser dryer — collects moisture in a reservoir or drains it via the water line. Most common faults: blocked condenser, faulty condensate pump, dirty moisture sensor.
Heat pump dryer — energy-efficient but technically more complex. Most faults are repairable, and given the purchase price of €700 to €1,200, it is almost always worth it.
Vented dryer — expels moist air through a hose outside. Simpler in construction; problems usually lie in the drain hose or the heating element.

Get the most out of your tumble dryer with the right maintenance
Did you know that the performance of your appliance greatly depends on how you maintain it? Many complaints — such as when laundry stays too damp for too long, a musty smell, a sudden higher energy bill — simply arise from neglected maintenance. Dust and lint accumulate unnoticed in filters and condensers, causing your appliance to work much harder.
Regular short checks yield immediately:
- Lower energy costs — a clean tumble dryer dries faster and uses significantly less electricity.
- More safety — removing lint buildup reduces the risk of overheating and fire.
- Fewer repairs — you prevent unnecessary wear on the motor and heating element.
How do I clean the plinth filter of my tumble dryer?
Be sure to clean the plinth filter after a notification from the appliance:
- Open the flap at the bottom front.
- Remove the filter and, if necessary, take off the plastic handle.
- Clean the filter under running water, remove lint with a damp cloth, and let it dry thoroughly.
Tip: such a filter doesn't cost much. If you buy a second filter, you can continue using the appliance while the other one dries.
Tip: you can also clean the filter in the washing machine at a maximum of 40 degrees and 600 spins.
Keep the user manual in your own language in an easily accessible place near the appliance. You can dispose of the other languages with the paper recycling.

Frequently asked questions about repairing tumble dryers
What does a tumble dryer repair cost?
A home diagnosis costs €69. If the technician can repair it, you pay an additional €110 — a total of up to €179, regardless of how long the work takes. A second visit is included. Parts are charged separately. If you decide not to proceed with the repair after the diagnosis, you only pay €69.
Is it cheaper to repair a tumble dryer than to buy a new one?
Almost always. A new heat pump tumble dryer costs €700 to €1,200. For appliances younger than ten years, a repair costing up to €179 is the wisest choice — and better for the environment.
What does it cost to replace the drive belt of a tumble dryer?
The labour is included in the fixed price of up to €179. Only the belt itself is charged separately; it is one of the cheaper parts. The technician will always inform you in advance.
How long does a tumble dryer repair take at home?
Most repairs are completed in one visit. If a part needs to be ordered, the technician will return a second time — that visit is included in the price.
Do you repair tumble dryers of all brands?
Yes. Our technicians work with AEG, Miele, Siemens, Bosch, Whirlpool, Beko, Samsung, Zanussi, ATAG, Electrolux and more.
