Common dishwasher problems (symptoms + solutions)
The dishwasher is not cleaning properly (or drying poorly)
- The filters are clean (food residues removed).
- The spray arms can rotate freely and the holes are not blocked.
- There is enough salt and rinse aid (if applicable).
- The drain is not (partially) blocked and no water remains at the bottom.
- The dishes are loaded correctly (no blockage of spray arms).
If the problem persists, there is a strong smell, or an error code appears: book a repair with one of our experts.
My dishwasher won't start
- The appliance is receiving power (plug is in properly, fuse/circuit breaker has not tripped).
- The door is closed properly (door lock clicks securely).
- The water supply is open (tap is open, hose is not kinked).
- There is no error message and you do not hear any beeping (if so: note the code).
If the dishwasher still does not start or stops immediately:

My dishwasher is not spraying anymore / the spray arms are not turning
- The spray arms are not blocked by large plates or pans.
- The spray arms can rotate freely and the holes are not blocked (rinse them out).
- The filters at the bottom are clean and correctly positioned.
- The water pressure is sufficient and the water supply is fully open.
If the problem recurs or the spray arms still do not turn: make an appointment with us.
Bad smell or backflow (reflux) in the dishwasher
If the smell keeps returning, dirty water flows back or water remains at the bottom:
The dishwasher is not draining anymore (water remains at the bottom)
Is the problem recurring or is the water standing? Then we can repair it via video (€49) or at home (€179).

Maintenance tips from our technicians
We believe it is important for appliances to function longer.
To help you with the proper use and maintenance of your appliance, we provide tips:
The most important tip!
Keep the user manual in your language handy. Place the other languages elsewhere or recycle them.
Keep the user manual in your language in an easily accessible place near the appliance, so you can find and read it when needed.
- The water supply tap can become blocked over time due to limescale.
- Therefore, it is advisable to fully turn the tap off and then back on every 6 months. This will loosen any possible limescale residues and wash them away.
- There must be sufficient water pressure. A simple rule is 10 litres per minute. That is filling one bucket per minute.
This is often the reason for drainage error codes in various brands.
Clean the sieve combination of your appliance:
- This is located in the tub (under the lower spray arm) and prevents the worst dirt from entering, which can cause blockages.
- Turn off the appliance.
- First, remove the lower spray arm so that you can access the sieve more easily.
- Unscrew the sieve combination from the drain basin, remove any loose parts where possible, and rinse away food residues in the drain basin.
- It is best to scrub well with a brush under running water to clear the small openings.
Check the space under the sieve and the drain pump:
- Watch out for sharp objects such as glass shards. It is best to wear protective gloves and possibly use a spoon.
- Scoop the water out of the rinse area with a cup.
- First, check the space directly under the sieve for foreign objects and remove them.
- Then remove the cover of the drain pump by prying it up or pushing away a locking flap.
- Check the cover for foreign objects and rinse it off under running water.
- Behind the cover is the drain pump. Remove all foreign objects (cherry stones, glass shards, etc.) and check if the impeller turns smoothly.
- Replace the cover of the drain pump and ensure it clicks securely into place.
- Assemble the filter combination, place it back, and click it into the sink. Any marked arrows must face each other.
With the exception of really large food scraps, dishes should not be rinsed under the tap before being placed in the dishwasher.
However, if large food scraps are not rinsed, the filters will eventually become clogged. It is therefore very important to clean the filters of your dishwasher every 2 months or when the washing results are insufficient. Cleaning the filters takes less than 5 minutes.
This is often the reason for drainage error codes in various brands.
First, check the hose for kinks.
Check the flow rate of the tap with a bucket. The flow rate should be at least 10L (about one large bucket full) per minute.
If the flow rate is too low, it is best to contact a plumber.
The water tap may be scaled, causing the flow rate to be too low. Turn the tap fully off and then fully on again.
The filter of the water supply or the Aqua-stop hose may be clogged.
- Turn off the tap.
- Dismantle the supply hose from the tap.
Clean the cover and filters with a small brush under running water.
- Note: the Aqua-stop safety feature contains an electric valve. Do not immerse in water!
- In appliances without Aqua-stop, remove the hose from the back of your appliance, take out the filter and the cover with pliers and clean them.
- Reconnect the hose and check for leaks.
Check that the spray arms are not stuck.
It is best to place plastic items in the top drawer as the heat is less intense there.
Place small items in the cutlery basket or drawer.
Knives and forks in a cutlery drawer are best washed with the points facing upwards, but for safety reasons, you may also choose to wash them facing down.
Cups, bottles, and bowls belong in the bottom drawer.
Place hollow items in such a way that water cannot get trapped inside.
Do not stack plates on top of each other. This prevents the upper parts from being sprayed with water, so the dishes cannot be cleaned properly.
Place mugs and bowls at a slight angle so that water cannot pool at their base.
Do not place hollow items too diagonally or in the corners. This ensures that plates can be rinsed properly.
If the appliances have a separate compartment for dishwasher tablets, please do not fill this with a fragrance dispenser. This may cause the dishwasher tablet not to dissolve properly.
Check that small items such as small spoons do not fall through the cutlery basket. These could block the spray arms at the bottom.
Do not stack plates on top of each other, otherwise they may not be sprayed with water properly.
Avoid covering flat plate surfaces. This prevents the dishwasher from removing food residues or stains from the dishes.
Do not overload the cutlery basket or the dishwasher may not clean these items properly. Place your cutlery where the dishwasher can clean it.
Place hollow items in such a way that water cannot get trapped inside. Do not allow items to stick out of the cutlery basket. This is to prevent the spray arms from getting stuck.
Tip: It is best to place heavily soiled dishes in the bottom drawer for intensive cleaning and perfect results.
Always place your cutlery in the cutlery basket unsorted with the sharp side facing down. To avoid injuries, place knives separately.
Place the cutlery in the cutlery drawer with the dirty/sharp side facing out. This is often not possible with cutlery that has a thicker handle.
Separately loading different types of cutlery makes unloading after rinsing easier.
You can often remove the cutlery drawer.
Place knives or other sharp objects with the pointed side facing down to avoid any injuries.
Do not stack cutlery on top of each other for a spotless finish.
Place spoons and ladles at a slight angle. This prevents water pooling and stains.
Depending on the configuration of your dishwasher, you may be able to fold down side panels to create more space for taller cutlery items.
Additionally, you can sometimes fold down the front row of spikes to accommodate larger handles.
Always start with the bottom drawer so that any water droplets do not fall onto your lower dishes.
Do not keep the dishwasher closed for too long after the programme has finished. This could prolong the drying process. Once the heating of the dishes is complete, condensation will form on the cooled plates.
Note: Hot plates are shock-sensitive! Allow them to cool in the dishwasher. Remove the plates about 30 minutes after the programme has ended.
Did you know that there may still be some water droplets in your appliance after the programme has finished? This does not affect the drying of the dishes.
The ECO programme of many brands uses less energy and water, but will take more time.
By soaking the dishes for longer, food residues dissolve and less water and a lower temperature are needed.
So YES, an ECO programme is better! Better for the environment and better for your wallet!
Note: To avoid limescale in your appliance and to melt and remove grease residues, it is recommended to use a higher temperature programme every 5 to 10 cycles. This will help your appliance work better, last longer, and avoid breakdowns and potential repairs.
Some appliances will actually notify you that a high-temperature programme is recommended after repeated use of low (<50°C) temperature programmes.
Regular maintenance of your appliance helps prevent any malfunctions, saving you time, money, and effort.
Maintenance with the correct products ensures that your results are always perfect.
Generally, dishwashers mostly maintain and descale themselves.
To remove bad odours, food residues & grease and limescale, it is still recommended to:
- run a programme at a higher temperature every 5 to 10 cycles (stains on glasses and cutlery are both signs that it is time to wash at a higher temperature),
- use a deep cleaner at least every 6 months,
- if the water in your area is hard or very hard, descale the dishwasher once a year (see further).
Also regularly clean the door seals and sides of the door with a damp cloth to remove food residues. These areas are not reached by the water jets and mould can form there.
Also clean the spray arms every 2 to 4 months:
- remove them from the appliance
- ensure that the spray openings are clear with a sharp object
- rinse thoroughly under the tap with running water
For a good result and for a longer lifespan of your dishwasher, it is important to wash with soft water (low concentration of limescale / low hardness).
That is why a dishwasher has a water softener.
It is important to set the water hardness when putting it into use.
Add regeneration salt to the corresponding salt reservoir.
- For some washing products, you do not need to use regeneration salt.
Also, if your water hardness is lower than 21 German degrees (dH), you do not need to use regeneration salt.
- Soft water: 4-8 dH
- Medium hard water: 8-17 dH
- Hard water: 17-25 dH
- Very hard water: > 25 dH
If you notice that limescale occurs, it is best to descale.
