Most common washing machine faults

A washing machine typically lasts 10 to 15 years. However, something can go wrong at any time. Below are the faults that our technicians encounter most often — with explanations of the cause and what a repair costs.

Why is my washing machine not turning ?

The drum no longer turns and the machine starts up, but the wash programme gets stuck? This is one of the most common breakdowns and almost always has one of three causes:

Broken drive belt. The drive belt (or V-belt) connects the motor to the drum. Over time, the belt wears out and breaks. You can recognise this by a humming motor sound without the drum moving. A technician usually replaces the belt in one visit.

Defective carbon brushes. The motor of your washing machine operates via carbon brushes that make electrical contact with the rotor. If the brushes are worn, the drum no longer turns or only at certain speeds. This is a part that wears out and is inexpensive to replace.

Broken motor control (board). If the motor itself or the motor control board is defective, a repair costs more. A technician first checks whether it is the board or the motor before making a proposal.

What does it cost to repair a non-turning drum? In the case of a broken drive belt or carbon brushes, the total cost (labour + part) is usually between €90 and €160. For a defective motor board, that is higher and the technician will discuss this after the diagnosis.

Why is my washing machine no longer spinning ?

If the machine washes but the spin cycle is skipped, or the laundry comes out soaking wet, there are several possible causes:

  • Clog in the drain filter. If water is not fully drained, the spin cycle automatically blocks (safety feature). Unscrew the filter (top right or bottom right at the front) and clean it. Note: water will come out.
  • Blocked or kinked drain hose. Check that the hose at the back is not kinked or too deep in the drain pipe (max. 15 cm deep).
  • Imbalance. Is there only one heavy item of clothing in the drum? Redistribute the laundry and start again.
  • Defective drain pump. If the filter is empty but water still remains, the pump is likely defective. This requires a technician.
  • Worn carbon brushes or defective board. See above (same as drum not turning).

Why is water leaking from my washing machine?

A leaking washing machine is urgent — water can damage floors and furniture. The cause depends on where the leak is:

Leak at the door (door seal/boot). The rubber sealing profile around the door (the boot) tears over time, especially if there are sharp objects like zippers in the wash. You will see water on the floor in front of the machine during washing. A technician will replace the door seal. Cost of replacing washing machine boot: the cuff itself costs depending on the brand €20 to €80. With labour, you can expect €100 to €170 in total.

Leak from the soap drawer. If the soap drawer is blocked with soap scum or fabric softener, water will overflow the edge. Remove and clean the drawer thoroughly. This can be done yourself.

Leak from an internal hose or pump connection. Internal hoses can come loose or tear. This requires opening the machine by a technician.

Leak via the water supply hose (back). Check that the hose is securely attached to the tap and the machine. Turn off the water supply when the machine is not in use.

Why is my washing machine making a banging noise?

Banging or rattling noise, especially during spinning, indicates:

Worn bearings. The bearings hold the drum on its axis. If they wear out, you will hear a loud rumbling or banging noise that increases as the spin speed rises. This is the most common cause of noise in older machines. This is a very labour-intensive repair that takes a long time. Therefore We.repair does not replace roller bearings or shafts of washing machines. 

Defective shock absorbers. Shock absorbers absorb the vibrations of the drum. If they are worn, the machine vibrates heavily and bangs against the casing. They are relatively inexpensive to replace.

Loose items in the drum. Always check pockets for coins, paperclips or buttons — they make a loud rattling noise in the drum.

Why is the water in my washing machine not getting warm?

Does your machine wash at 60° but the door window remains cold? Then the heating element is likely defective due to limescale. In hard water areas (Antwerp, Brussels, Ghent) this is a common problem. A technician will replace the element. Prevention: perform a maintenance programme at 90° with citric acid or a specific descaler monthly.

Why is there water left in my washing machine?

If there is water in the drum after the wash cycle and the machine does not proceed, this is almost always a drainage issue. Follow these steps before calling a technician:

1. Maak de afvoerfilter schoon. De filter zit achter een klein klepje rechtsonder vooraan de machine. Leg handdoeken klaar — er komt water uit. 2. Check the drain hose. The corrugated hose at the back should not be kinked or flattened, and should not extend more than 15 cm deep into the standpipe. Too deep causes a siphoning effect.

3. Does the machine recognise the problem? Error codes such as E18 (Bosch/Siemens), F21 (Whirlpool) or 5E/5C (Samsung) indicate a drainage failure. If the error code does not disappear after cleaning the filter, then the drain pump is likely defective or blocked by an object that has passed the filter.

Keep the instruction manual for your language. Place the other languages in a different location or throw them in the recycling.

Place the instructions in your language in an easily accessible location near the device, so that you do not encounter any resistance in finding and reading them.

The water supply tap may eventually become blocked due to limescale buildup.

Therefore, it is good to fully turn the tap off and then back on every 6 months. This helps to dislodge any possible limescale residues and flush them away.

Too much foam can be produced if you wash laundry that is only lightly soiled or if you add too much detergent or use unsuitable/old detergent.

Foam and water can cause the detergent drawer to overflow or leak through the door.

Especially in areas with soft water and when washing lightly soiled laundry, the amount of detergent should be reduced accordingly.

Too much or too little detergent in your washing machine can lead to poor washing results.

When it comes to the correct dosage of detergent, there are three important considerations:

  1. Look at how dirty the laundry is: the dirtier the clothes, the more detergent is needed to remove the dirt. You may not see it, but about 70% of the dirt in clothing comes from the body, such as skin flakes, sweat, grease, and other bodily substances. Only 30% of the dirt in clothing comes from external sources, such as food, mud, grass, lotions, and creams.
  2. Look at how much laundry you have: the recommended amounts of detergent are based on the size of the washing machine drum, and there's a good reason for that. The more laundry there is, the more dirt comes with it, so the more detergent is needed to remove it.
  3. Check the water hardness in your area: hard water contains many minerals, which need to be softened and neutralised for better washing results. That is why detergent manufacturers recommend using slightly more detergent for this than for areas with average water hardness.

It is very tempting to cram as much laundry as possible into the drum of your washing machine, but overloading your washing machine not only significantly reduces washing performance, it can also seriously damage your appliance.

Important reasons to avoid overloading your washing machine:

  • The detergent cannot circulate effectively enough to remove dirt and stains. If the washing machine is overloaded, the laundry moves in one large mass, preventing the garments from moving freely in the drum and the detergent from circulating effectively among the laundry to remove dirt and stains.
  • The washing machine and the clothes can become damaged. Overloading also increases the pressure in the drum, especially when it spins at high speed, which can cause damage to the bearings and even lead to the glass door breaking. The clothes are pressed against the door seal, and as the drum turns, the clothes rub against the rubber, causing wear and even tears in the clothing.

How do you best load the washing machine?

  • When filling the drum, it is important to find the right balance between enough laundry to wash economically and enough space at the top of the drum for an effective wash result.
  • For the best washing results, there must be enough water to dissolve the detergent and enough space for your clothes to move. If you overfill the drum, there will be less water available to dissolve the detergent, as the clothes absorb the water.
  • Therefore, it is advisable to leave a hand's width of space at the top of the drum above the laundry. This is approximately equivalent to a 3/4 filled drum.
  • Having too little laundry in the drum is also undesirable, as it is uneconomical and can result in a loud, banging noise during spinning, because the load is unevenly distributed.

Did you know that ... with a fully loaded machine, the door sometimes doesn't close properly?

  1. Sort the white laundry and wash it separately from other colours.
  2. Use a detergent specifically for white laundry. It contains ingredients that bleach your wash.
  3. Use the correct amount of detergent according to the level of soiling of the laundry and the water hardness. If the amount of detergent is incorrect, limescale and soap residues may remain on the clothing, which can lead to a greyish colour.
  4. Make sure that the bottle of detergent is properly sealed. Some bleaching agents can evaporate.
  5. White towels can be bleached by placing them in a washing basin with 100 ml of water and 200 ml of bleach, and allowing them to soak for 2 hours. After that, wash them in the washing machine at the highest temperature allowed according to the care instructions for the towels..
  6. Never mix bleach with other chemicals as this can create toxic substances.
  7. White towels that have turned grey due to limescale deposits can be made white again by washing them in the washing machine with a small amount of citric acid powder or vinegar, instead of detergent.
