Not every error message means that something is broken. With these three codes, the cause is almost always related to maintenance or loading — and you can fix it in a quarter of an hour, without a technician.

What does error code F66 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

F66 is by far the most common Miele message, and in most cases, there is nothing defective: the sock filter for the heat exchanger is dirty.

Miele lists nine possible causes, from dirty fluff filters and a blocked sock filter to an overfull drum, a blocked ventilation grille under the door, or insufficient ventilation in the room. A sock filter with white deposits — which comes from too much detergent when washing — or a deformed filter can also be the cause.

Here's how to tackle it:

1. Clean the fluff filters (see the maintenance section below).
2. Open the flap for the heat exchanger by pressing against the round, low-lying area.
3. Pull the sock filter out by the handle and remove the handle.
4. Rinse the filter thoroughly under running water. Let the stream run vertically over the front and gently squeeze in between. Lay the filter flat in a bowl and press gently with your flat hand for stubborn residues.
5. Allow the sock filter to dry completely before replacing it. This is where it usually goes wrong: if you replace the filter while it is still wet, the programme will stop again with an error message. Place it between two towels or let it air dry.
6. Check the heat exchanger for fluff. Vacuum it away with a vacuum cleaner and brush — lightly and without pressure. The cooling fins are sharp, do not touch them with bare hands, and bent fins lead to poorer drying results.
7. Slide the sock filter fully in and close the flap.

If the filter is deformed or damaged, it will no longer fit properly and fluff will enter the heat exchanger unfiltered. So replace it — it can be ordered separately. You can also wash the sock filter separately in the washing machine without detergent, at a maximum of 40 degrees and 600 rpm.

Dispose of the fluff with the household waste and not in the drain: it concerns microplastics.

What does error code F55 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

F55 appears when the laundry is still not dry after the maximum drying time of 180 minutes. The code only occurs in programmes that operate on residual moisture.

Miele lists four causes, and none of them is a defect:

• The drum is overloaded.
• The laundry is too wet.
• The lint filters are dirty.
• The textiles have not been sufficiently spun.

The solution is correspondingly simple: respect the maximum load from the user manual, spin the laundry in the washing machine at a higher speed, and clean the lint filters thoroughly.

When cleaning, pay attention to one thing: wet lint filters can cause functional disturbances themselves. Rinse the sieve surfaces under running warm water, shake off the water, and dry them carefully before replacing them.

If F55 keeps coming back while the load and filters are fine, then there may be something wrong with the moisture sensor or the heat pump circuit. Make an appointment.

What does error code F50 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

F50 has three possible causes, two of which are harmless.

Usually, the drum is simply too full. Remove some of the laundry and start again.

Additionally, F50 can appear about a minute after opening the door — for example, when you are adding laundry. That is a software error, not a defect. Turn the appliance off and then back on immediately.

If the code remains while the load is correct, then it is indeed a technical fault and a technician is needed.

What does error code F252 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

The door contacts at the hinge are dirty. Clean them carefully — that usually suffices. If the message keeps coming back, then the contact block is worn out and needs to be replaced.

Common Miele tumble dryer problems without error codes

Why is the drying programme of my Miele tumble dryer taking so long?

This is the most common complaint, and usually the cause lies in contamination or loading. Miele lists six possible causes:

• It is too warm in the installation space.
• Residues of detergent, hair, and lint clog the lint filters, the plinth filter, or the heat exchanger.
• The laundry is unevenly distributed or rolled up, or the drum is too full.
• The air intake grille at the bottom right is blocked, for example by a laundry basket.
• The laundry is too wet and was insufficiently spun.
• Metal zippers interfere with the calculation of the moisture level.

So ensure adequate ventilation, clean the filters (see the maintenance section below), shake the laundry loose, keep the grille clear, and spin at a higher speed. If the problem persists with clothing that has zippers, dry it using the Warm air programme.

Why is my laundry not dry after the programme?

Usually because the load consisted of different types of fabric. Thick towels and thin T-shirts simply do not dry at the same rate, and the machine operates based on the average residual moisture.

Dry the damp items afterwards with the Warm air programme and sort by fabric type and thickness from now on. In some programmes, you can set the desired residual moisture separately via the settings or programming functions.

Why won't my Miele tumble dryer start?

Two simple reasons: the appliance is not switched on, or the door is not properly closed. Check if the plug is in the socket, if the fuse has not blown, and if the door clicks shut completely.

Why doesn't the drum turn after I start the programme?

Either the door is not closed correctly, or the delayed start is activated. In the latter case, the programme only starts when the set time has elapsed — so nothing is broken.

Why does the programme stop after just a few minutes?

Often because the laundry is not wet enough: the appliance determines that drying is not necessary and ends the programme. A too small load can also cause this; dry small amounts with the Warm air programme.

If this happens with a normal, wet load, there may be a technical defect. Disconnect the appliance from the power supply, wait a moment, and start again. If the problem persists, a technician is needed.

Why does my Miele tumble dryer make clicking noises?

That is normal. The residual moisture control switches during the programme, and that clicking is part of it. There is nothing to repair.

Why does my Miele tumble dryer make grinding or squeaking noises?

This comes from the rollers on which the drum is mounted. Miele classifies that sound as normal for a tumble dryer.

If the sound gradually becomes louder or metallic, then there is indeed wear on the bearing. That is a repair that the technician performs at home.

Why is my Miele tumble dryer buzzing or humming?

No fault. In a heat pump model, it is the compressor that is running. In certain programmes, condensate water is also sprayed into the drum, which produces a humming sound. You don't need to do anything.

Why is water leaking from my Miele tumble dryer?

This is almost always about the drainage, not the appliance itself. Three causes:

• The drain hose is not correctly connected to the siphon.
• The non-return valve is missing, incorrectly positioned, or dirty, causing drained water to flow back.
• The tumble dryer and the washing machine share the same drain, with the same issue at the non-return valve.

Check the installation of the drain hose and the non-return valve. If water continues to leak while everything is correctly connected, make an appointment.

Why is water leaking after cleaning the heat exchanger?

The condensate provision is not properly closed. Check if the heat exchanger and the lid are securely fastened and close them again. This is the most common mistake after a maintenance check.

Why does my Miele tumble dryer smell like rubber?

With a new appliance, that smell is normal. It will naturally decrease after a few drying programmes.

Why does my laundry smell musty after drying?

Two causes: wet textiles that have been left in the appliance for too long, or too little detergent during washing.

By simply continuing to use the appliance, it ventilates and the smell disappears. For a condenser dryer, it helps to clean the heat exchanger and the filters. From now on, follow the dosing instructions on the detergent packaging.

Why is there lint on my laundry after drying?

Lint mainly occurs due to friction during wearing; in the dryer, they come loose. The friction in the appliance itself is limited. Normally, the lint filter and the sock filter catch them — if there is a lot of lint on your laundry, those filters need cleaning.

Why is my laundry statically charged after drying?

This is normal for synthetic textiles. Add fabric softener during the final rinse cycle in your next wash.

Maintenance of your Miele dryer

Almost all Miele error messages we encounter at home can be traced back to overdue filter maintenance. A quarter of an hour per month prevents most interventions.

Always throw the lint in the household waste and never in the drain — it concerns microplastics. Also, pour the cleaning water through a coffee filter and throw that filter away.

How do I clean the lint filters of my Miele dryer?

Do this after each drying programme.

1. Open the door and pull the top lint filter forward out.
2. Remove the lint from all filter surfaces and from the perforated laundry protection.
3. Turn the yellow knob on the lower lint filter in the direction of the arrow until you hear a click, and pull the filter forward out.
4. Vacuum the visible lint from the openings of the air guiding section with the long nozzle.
5. Clean the smooth plastic surfaces with a damp cloth and rinse the sieve surfaces under running warm water.
6. Shake off the water and carefully dry the filters afterwards. Wet fluff filters can cause malfunctions — so only replace them when they are dry.
7. Slide the lower filter fully in and lock it with the yellow button, slide the upper filter in and close the door.

How do I clean the sock filter of my Miele tumble dryer?

Do this as soon as the control light comes on. Work over a bowl or bucket, as water will be released.

1. Open the flap for the heat exchanger by pressing against the round, low-lying area.
2. Pull the sock filter out by the handle. The right guide pin comes out with it — this prevents the flap from closing without a filter.
3. Pull the handle out of the filter.
4. Rinse the filter thoroughly under running water. Let the stream run vertically over the front and gently squeeze in between.
5. For stubborn residues: lay the filter flat in the bowl and press gently with the flat hand. Rinse until no residues are visible.
6. Squeeze the filter until no more water drips out. Optionally, place it between two towels.
7. Allow the sock filter to dry completely before replacing it. If the programme stops with an error message after replacement, the filter was still too wet — squeeze it out again and let it air dry.
8. Wipe the fluff from the handle with a damp cloth and correctly place the filter on the handle.

If the filter is deformed, caked with white deposits or damaged, it will no longer fit properly and lint will enter the heat exchanger unfiltered. So replace it. You can also wash the sock filter separately in the washing machine, without detergent, at a maximum of 40 degrees and 600 rpm.

How do I clean the heat exchanger of my Miele tumble dryer?

Do this each time you remove the sock filter.

Check if there is lint on the heat exchanger and remove it with a vacuum cleaner and a relief brush. Go lightly and without pressure over the cooling fins.

Two warnings: the cooling fins are sharp, do not touch them with bare hands. And bent fins lead to a permanently poorer drying result — so do not apply pressure.

Then slide the sock filter fully in until the right pin also slides in. Wipe away the lint with a damp cloth without damaging the sealing rubber, and close the flap.

Condenser dryer or heat pump — we repair both

Miele manufactures both condenser dryers and heat pump models. The current generation is designated T1 and TCE; older devices are called TKR, TDB or TDA.

In a condenser dryer drying complaints usually point to the heating element, the moisture sensor or the condensation system. In a heat pump model the refrigerant circuit plays a central role: the codes F1, F2, F156, F157, F206 and F207 all refer to temperature sensors in that circuit, and F159 to the compressor.

Heat pump tumble dryers are technically more complex, but Miele appliances are designed for twenty years of use. Given that a new model quickly costs €900 to €1,500, a repair costing up to €179 is almost always the wisest choice.

Temperature sensors and refrigerant circuit

These codes indicate a defective sensor in the heat pump circuit. In the case of a short circuit, the control no longer measures a valid value, and in the case of a power failure, the signal completely disappears. Checking it yourself is pointless — the sensors are deep inside the device and need to be measured.

What does error code F1 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

Short circuit in the temperature sensor of the refrigerant. The control receives an impossible measurement value and stops the programme for safety. A technician measures the sensor and replaces it. This is usually a limited repair.

What does error code F2 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

Power failure in the temperature sensor of the refrigerant. While F1 indicates a short circuit, this is about an interruption: the control receives no signal at all. Usually the sensor itself or the wiring to it.

Door and locking

What does error code F30 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

The door and the door contact give a different signal: the control sees the door as closed while the contact reports something different, or vice versa. For safety, the programme does not start. First, check if the door clicks shut completely and that nothing is in between. If the code remains, then the contact is defective.

What does error code F36 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

The reed contact of the door is defective. This is the magnetic switch that registers whether the door is closed. To be replaced by a technician; a common repair.

Motor and compressor

What does error code F53 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

The drive motor is defective, or there is a fault in the electronics that controls it. The drum does not rotate or rotates irregularly. The technician determines on-site whether it is the motor or the control.

What does error code F104 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

The mains voltage to the drive motor is too low. This may be due to the motor supply or the electronics that provide the voltage.

What does error code F159 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

Compressor start error. The compressor is the heart of the heat pump: without a functioning compressor, the drum remains cold and does not dry the laundry. This is the most serious repair on this list, but for a Miele that can last twenty years, it is usually still worth it.

Electronics and control

For the codes in this group, Miele provides no further explanation: their documentation only states "There is an electronics fault." In practice, this concerns the control or power electronics. Which board exactly can only be determined on-site with a readout.

What does error code F38 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

An electronics fault. Miele does not specify which board is involved. First, try a reset by disconnecting the appliance from the power supply and reconnecting it after a few minutes. If the code remains, a readout on-site is necessary.

What does error code F39 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

An electronics fault, with no further specification in the Miele documentation. Again, a reset is the only sensible first step.

What does error code F40 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

An electronics fault. The same approach as with F38 and F39.

What does error code F41 mean on my Miele tumble dryer?

Miele display and light messages

Not every message on the display is a fault. These messages usually mean that the appliance is asking something from you, or that a setting is on.

What does 888 mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?

The demo function is on, which prevents the programme from starting. This sometimes happens with showroom models.

If your appliance has a power button: turn off the tumble dryer, close the door, hold Start/Stop pressed and turn the appliance on while holding that button. After five seconds, the button will light continuously. Release briefly and then hold it down again for three seconds until the button goes out.

Without a power button: turn on, open the door, hold Start/Stop pressed and close the door while holding. Otherwise identical.

What does ADD mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?

No fault. You have touched the sensor button Start/Drum refill, and the appliance indicates that you may open the door to add or remove something.

If you do not want to add anything, the programme will continue automatically after a short time. If you have already opened the door: close it and touch Start/Drum refill again.

What does CHE mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?

The programme has been cancelled because the laundry is unevenly distributed or rolled up. Loosen the laundry, possibly remove a part, turn the appliance off and on again, and start anew.

What does Ctrl mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?

The Remote Control function is on and your device is connected to the Miele Cloud via the Miele app. No fault. If you no longer wish to see the notification, you can disable that function via programming function P97, option 00.

What does noC mean on the display of my Miele tumble dryer?

noC stands for "no connection" and appears with MobileStart. Either Miele@home has not yet been set up, or the device is not receiving a wifi signal.

Check with your router if wifi is active, restart the router and booster if necessary, and check if the signal at the installation site is strong enough. If that does not help, reset the device's wifi to factory settings, switch it off and on again, and reconnect. A successful connection will show Con in the time display.

Why is the Air Ducts Clean light on my Miele tumble dryer lit?

The fluff filters or the plinth filter are dirty. Follow the cleaning steps from the maintenance block above.

To turn off the light: open and close the door while the tumble dryer is switched on.

Why is the Empty Reservoir light on my Miele tumble dryer lit?

Either the condensate reservoir is full, or the drain hose is kinked.

Switch off the tumble dryer, pull out the condensate reservoir, empty it and slide it back in until it is securely in place. Also check that the drain hose is not kinked anywhere — use the hose holder to prevent that.

If the light remains on while the reservoir is empty and the hose is clear, the condensate pump may be defective.

Why does Filter door clean keep appearing on my Miele tumble dryer?

Because the appliance does not register the opening and closing of the door when it is switched off — the notification is then not reset.

So do it in this order, with the tumble dryer still switched on: open the door, clean the filter, close the door, press OK, and only then switch off.
