General tips for your Dishwasher

for a better washing result and less chance of breakdowns

Using a washing machine seems simple. However, with the advice below from our experts, you may be able to improve your washing results and avoid the risk of breakdowns and potential repairs.

Read below our tips and tricks that apply to almost all washing machines.

We believe it is important for appliances to function for longer. Sustainability and circularity are key pillars in our mission.

Allow devices to work longer and repair if necessary!

  • If you might be able to solve the problem yourself, we provide tips. You can find them below and on the product pages for each brand (in the menu under First Aid).
  • If the problem is too complex or dangerous to resolve on your own, we will advise having a repair carried out by one of our experienced technicians..

The most important tip

Read the instructions!

Keep the instruction manual for your language. Place the other languages in a different location or throw them in the recycling.

Place the instructions in your language in an easily accessible location near the device, so that you do not encounter any resistance in finding and reading them.

Tap water supply

The water supply tap may eventually become blocked due to limescale buildup.

Daarom is het goed om elke 6 maanden de kraan eens helemaal toe en terug helemaal open te draaien. Zo komen mogelijke kalkresten los en spoelen weg.

How can you best load a dishwasher?

Check that the spray arms are not stuck.

You should place plastic in the top drawer as the heat there is less intense.

Place small items in the cutlery basket or drawer.

It is best to wash knives and forks in a cutlery drawer with the points facing upwards, but for safety reasons, you may also choose to wash them facing downwards.

Cups, bottles and bowls belong in the bottom drawer.

Instructions for loading the top basket

Place hollow objects in such a way that water cannot become trapped inside.

Do not stack plates on top of each other. This prevents the top items from being sprayed with water. This way, the dishes cannot be properly cleaned.

Place cups and bowls at a slight angle so that water cannot accumulate at their base.

Do not place hollow items too diagonally or in the corners. This ensures that plates can be rinsed properly.

If the appliances have a separate compartment for dishwasher tablets, please do not fill this with a fragrance dispenser. This may cause the dishwasher tablet not to dissolve properly.

Check that small items such as teaspoons do not go through the cutlery basket. These could block the spray arms at the bottom.

Instructions for loading the bottom basket

Do not stack plates on top of each other, otherwise they may not be sprayed with water properly.

Avoid covering flat plate surfaces. This prevents the dishwasher from removing food residues or stains from the dishes.

Do not overload the cutlery basket or the dishwasher will not be able to clean these items properly. Place your cutlery where the dishwasher can clean it.

Place hollow items in such a way that water cannot become trapped inside. Do not allow items to protrude through the cutlery basket. This is to prevent the spray arms from getting stuck.

Tip: It is best to place heavily soiled dishes in the bottom drawer for intensive cleaning and perfect results.

Instructions for loading a cutlery basket (basket at the bottom)

Always place your cutlery in the cutlery basket unsorted with the sharp edge facing downwards. To prevent injuries, it is best to place knives separately.

Instructions for loading a cutlery drawer (at the top)

Place the cutlery in the cutlery drawer with the dirty/sharp side facing outwards. With cutlery that has a thicker handle, this is often not possible.

Loading different types of cutlery separately makes unloading after washing easier.

You can often remove the cutlery drawer.

Place knives or other sharp objects with the pointed side down to avoid any injuries.

Do not stack the cutlery on top of each other for a flawless finish.

Place spoons and ladles at a slight angle. This prevents water pooling and stains.

Depending on the configuration of your dishwasher, you may be able to fold down side panels to create more space for taller cutlery items.

Moreover, you can sometimes fold down the front row of spikes to accommodate larger handles.

How can you best empty the dishwasher?

Always start with the bottom drawer so that any droplets of water do not fall onto your bottom dishes.

After the programme has finished, do not keep the dishwasher closed for too long. This could prolong the drying process. Once the heating of the dishes is complete, condensation will form on the cooled plates.

Note: Hot plates are shock sensitive! Allow them to cool in the dishwasher. Remove the plates approximately 30 minutes after the programme has finished.

Did you know that after the programme has finished, there may still be some water droplets in your appliance? This does not affect the drying of the dishes.

Is an ECO programme now better or not?

The ECO programme of many brands consumes less energy and water, but will require more time.

By soaking the dishes for longer, food residues dissolve and less water and a lower temperature are needed.

So YES, an ECO programme is better! Better for the environment and better for your wallet!

Note: to avoid limescale in your appliance and to melt and remove grease residues, it is recommended to use a programme with a higher temperature every 5 to 10 cycles. This will help your appliance work better, last longer, and prevent breakdowns and potential repairs.

Some appliances will actually notify you that a high-temperature programme is recommended after repeated use of programmes with low (<50°C) temperatures.

Maintenance of your dishwasher

Regular maintenance of your device helps to prevent any malfunctions, saving you time, money, and effort.

Maintenance with the correct products also ensures that your results are always perfect.

Generally, dishwashers mostly maintain and descale themselves.

To remove unpleasant odours, food residues, grease, and limescale, it is still recommended to:

  • to run a programme at a higher temperature for 5 to 10 cycles (stains on glasses and cutlery are both signs that it is time to wash at a higher temperature),
  • to carry out a deep clean at least every 6 months,
  • If the water in your area is hard or very hard, descale the dishwasher once a year.

Also regularly clean the door seals and sides of the door with a damp cloth to remove food residues. These edges are not reached by the water jets, and mould can form there.

Also clean the spray arms every 2 to 4 months:

  • take them out of the device
  • be careful with a sharp object that the spray openings are open
  • rinse well under the tap with running water

Regeneration salt and descaling

For a good result and a longer lifespan of your dishwasher, it is important to wash with soft water (low concentration of lime / low hardness).

That is why a dishwasher contains a water softener.

It is important to set the water hardness at the time of commissioning.

Add regenerating salt to the corresponding salt reservoir.

  • For some dishwashing products, you do not need to use regenerating salt.
  • Even if your water hardness is lower than 21 German degrees (dH), you do not need to use regenerating salt.
    • Soft water: 4-8 dH
    • Moderately hard water: 8-17 dH
    • Hard water: 17-25 dH
    • Very hard water: > 25 dH

If you notice that limescale is still occurring, it's best to descale.

Maintenance of the sieve and the opening to the drainage pump

This is often the reason for drainage error codes in various brands.

Clean the sieve combination of your device:

  • This is located in the tub (under the lower spray arm) and prevents the worst dirt from entering, which can cause it to become blocked.
  • Turn off the device.
  • First, remove the lower spray arm so that you can more easily access the filter.
  • Unscrew the strainer from the sink, remove any loose parts where possible, and rinse away food residues in the sink.
  • It is best to scrub well with a brush under running water to clear the small openings properly.
  • Check the space under the sieve and the drain pump:
    • Be careful of sharp objects such as glass shards. It is best to wear protective gloves and possibly use a spoon.
    • Scoop the water out of the wash area with a cup.
    • First, check the space directly beneath the sieve for foreign objects and remove them.
    • Then remove the cover of the drainage pump by lifting it up or by pushing away a locking flap
    • Check the cover for foreign objects and rinse them briefly under running water.
    • Behind the cover is the drainage pump. Remove all foreign objects (cherry stones, glass shards, etc.) and check if the impeller rotates smoothly.
    • Replace the cover of the drainage pump and ensure it clicks into place securely.
  • Assemble the sieve combination, place it back and click it into the sink. Any marked arrows must be opposite each other.

Except for really large food scraps, the dishes should not be rinsed under the tap before being placed in the dishwasher.

If large food residues are not rinsed away, the filters will eventually become clogged. It is therefore very important to clean the filters of your dishwasher every 2 months or when the washing results are insufficient. Cleaning the filters takes less than 5 minutes.

The flow rate of the water is too low

This is often the reason for drainage error codes in various brands.

First, check the hose for kinks.

Check the flow rate of the tap with a bucket. The flow rate should be at least 10L (approximately one large bucket full) per minute.

If the flow rate is too low, it is best to contact a plumber.

The water tap may be scaled, causing the flow rate to be too low. Try turning the tap all the way off and then back on again.

The filter of the water supply or the Aqua-stop hose may be blocked.

  • Turn off the tap.
  • Remove the supply hose from the tap
  • Clean the cover and sieve with a small brush under running water.
    • Note: the Aqua-stop safety feature contains an electric valve. Do not immerse in water!
    • In appliances without Aqua-stop, remove the hose from the back of your appliance, take out the filter and the cover with pliers and clean them.
  • Reconnect the hose and check for leaks.
